There are many studies that suggest that consuming red wine will reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease. This is probably attributed to the antioxidant effect of a particular grape skin extract called resveratrol. It is also marketed as having anti-aging effects and for use as a dietary supplement to help lose weight. The resveratrol in grape skin is said to help lower cholesterol, combat cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure and fight carcinogens. That is not to say it is a miracle cure all, but that as a daily supplement it can help to reduce certain health risks.

Recent medical studies have also shown that the grape skin extract resveratrol has been shown to induce production of fetal hemoglobin. Outside of the other benefits described, production of fetal hemoglobin decreases sickling of red blood cells and eases painful vascular episodes associated with sickle cell anemia. Resveratrol and another grape skin extract are also being studied and shown to be potentially beneficial in the reduction of prostate cancer growth.

Regardless of the hype surrounding resveratrol, there is a lot of research being done on the benefits of taking it, and it has been determined to be powerful antioxidant. So if you are opposed to drinking a glass of wine per day, then a resveratrol supplement may be just what you need.
