Resveratrol Benefits

If you’ve followed the latest news on health breakthroughs, you’ve probably heard about the amazing resveratrol benefits being reported. Though research is still being done, resveratrol supplements have become very popular with the public at large. The resveratrol found in red wine is a favorite with the French who are known for their low rate of heart disease and other ailments despite eating high calorie foods. Many multivitamin pills now have resveratrol as an ingredient as well.

Though the resveratrol benefits are still waiting to be confirmed by the scientific community at large, no one has ever reported any side effects or problems so far, and the benefits appear to be very favorable in promoting good health.

Resveratrol came under the lime light in 1963. It became known as ko-jo-kon in Japan. It was an essential part of the Asian Folk medicine. With time, people discovered it in grapes and then in red wine in the year 1992.

Many experts advocate drinking approximately 4 ounces of red wine with dinner due to the many resveratrol benefits. People who don’t like to drink wine can receive the same benefits by taking supplements that contain the resveratrol compound. In fact, many resveratrol supplements contain a much larger dose of resveratrol than can be found in multiple bottles of red wine.

Even though the medical community is yet to give an official declaration about resveratrol benefits, most researches now know for sure that the presence of resveratrol in plants helps in preventing all kinds of infections whether viral or fungal. This compound also has antibiotic properties and is a well known antioxidant. Antioxidants help in preventing the harmful effects of free radicals and oxidative stress.

What is yet to be proven conclusively is whether resveratrol provides the very same benefits in the human body as it does in plants. However, observations over time have suggested that a healthy intake of a wide variety of fruits helps in decreasing the probability of major diseases like cancer, heart disease and other chronic ailments. Anti oxidants such as resveratrol are also responsible for the different vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables.

Resveratrol doesn’t have antioxidant benefits alone, as it is also a well-known anti-inflammatory and anti mutagen. In fact, Resveratrol is thought to help in reducing inflammation and other such problems in muscles and cells. This is very important, as most diseases are believed to be a result of chronic inflammation that occurs over time. Examples of this include cancer and various forms of heart disease. Moreover, resveratrol is thought to prevent the mutation of cells into tumors and other cancerous formations. Though there are manmade anti-inflammatory supplements that can be consumed, most of them come with a long list of side effects. On the contrary, resveratrol is completely natural and free of side effects.

Resveratrol is also thought to have some preventive effects on diseases like Alzheimer’s where the compound can help in preventing inflammation in the nerve cells. According to a study reported in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, a recent experiment pointed to resveratrol helping to control the spread of the influenza virus in rat cells. Thus, resveratrol may help in preventing or even treating various strains of flu.

There are undoubtedly many resveratrol benefits that are yet to be uncovered. This amazing compound has been around for centuries but it’s only now beginning to receive the recognition as a true scientific breakthrough toward maintaining good health and longevity.
